The New Orleans Association of Black Journalists was founded in the 1980s and led by the founding president, Warren Bell, to unite Black journalists in the New Orleans metro area through fellowship and scholarship. The organization has advocated for Black journalists in front and behind the camera, raised funds for young Black journalists who plan to enter the field, and connected colleagues through professional mixers, special events, forums, and fireside chats.
Since its founding, New Orleans has hosted three National conventions, bringing the quality programming provided by the National Association of Black Journalists to the Crescent City. This further increases opportunities for Black journalists in our community. NOABJ’s membership includes emerging journalists, professional journalists, student journalists, journalism educators, media professionals, and two National presidents.
As an affiliate of the National Association of Black Journalists, we are committed to our parent organization’s purpose, including:
- Strengthening ties among Black journalists, student journalists, journalism educators, and media professionals
- Sensitizing all media to the importance of fairness in the workplace for Black journalists;
- Expanding job opportunities and recruiting activities for veteran, young, and aspiring Black journalists and media professionals while providing continued professional development and training;
