NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Association of Black Journalists (501c3) will host the 2nd Annual Scholarship Jazz Brunch and Silent Auction on Saturday, October 12th at The Cannery.
In our inaugural year, NOABJ hosted a sold-out crowd treated to jazz music, delicious catered food, and a celebration of journalism excellence at the New Orleans Jazz Museum.
As the event grows, we have chosen a larger venue to cater to the many journalists, community leaders and supporters who plan to attend.
In addition to the fellowship, NOABJ will award (2) scholarships to students working to further their journalism education.
We will also honor Black journalists who were pivotal in providing fair and accurate coverage of the New Orleans community. The 2024 honorees are:
Ro Brown
LeBron “LBJ” Joseph
Beverly Mckenna
Monica Pierre
These Black Journalists and media professionals have catalyzed change in our community through their presence and work. We must continue to support young people entering the media landscape as today’s climate calls for truth, transparency and accountability.
To assist in our efforts in supporting future journalists, NOABJ is proud to announce ENTERGY New Orleans as our presenting sponsor.
“We’re pleased to support NOABJ and their mission to inspire African American students to pursue careers in journalism and communications,” said Deanna Rodriguez, president and CEO of Entergy New Orleans. “Journalists play a vital role in the community, and it’s critical to ensure that diverse perspectives are well represented in the industry.”
Last year, the jazz brunch raised more than $20,000 from generous donors and we are committed to increasing that goal.
“The NOABJ Jazz Brunch has become a premiere event for our organization,” said NOABJ President Charisse Gibson. “It’s beautiful to see journalists from all backgrounds come together to support a more diverse future in the journalism and media industry while also acknowledging all who came before us.”
The event will be hosted by WDSU Anchor Darryl Forges with music provided by DJ SugarCookie and local musicians. The jazz brunch will take place at The Cannery located at 3803 Toulouse St from 11 am to 2 pm. There will also be a silent auction with proceeds benefiting the NOABJ Scholarship Fund.
